Hundreds of people - including students of Jamia Millia Islamia - protesting the citizenship law clashed with police in south Delhi this evening, turning the posh New Friends Colony into a war zone. Buses were set ablaze and batons and tear gas was used and cops were seen chasing protesters through the streets. For now, the police have taken control of the area and are trying to push the students back into the university campus. Traffic has been diverted from the entire area.

Delhi Police have said they misjudged the scale of the protest; they had anticipated a crowd of between 100 and 200 but are now faced with hundreds more, including both students and members of the public.

Two firemen have been injured and one fire tender has been damaged in the protests.

In a statement released shortly after the violence broke out, the students disassociated themselves from the violence and said they had repeatedly "maintained our protests are peaceful and non-violent.
